2015: Year of Power

2015: Year of Power

What happened for you in 2015? What were your triumphs and challenges? 2015 was a year of change and development for a lot of people. Each person has had their own unique experience of this year, but there are certain energies that draw us all together in our experience. One way of representing this energy is through numbers.

I'll share a little bit of knowledge about the universal energy of this time, and also offer a method you can use to understand your own personal energy around this year and the next.

In numerology, we calculate something called the Universal Year. It's a number that represents the energy the whole world shares around a certain year. To calculate the Universal Year Number, we add together the digits of a year, and "reduce" it to a single digit.

The Universal Year for 2015 was 2 + 0 + 1 + 5 = 8.

What does the number 8 mean?

In Chinese numerology, 8 represents money. Who doesn't like money? (OK, I guess that's a question for later...) "Money/finances/abundance" is the most popular meaning of 8 that has crept into our contemporary view of numerology, amidst the smorgasbord of cultural influences that hold our understanding together. But on a core level, the number 8 is really all about power.

A nice way to think about 8's meaning is to look at the shape of the number. You could see it as a criss-cross figure 8, a sideways infinity symbol, which implies continuity, balance, crossing over boundaries, and infinite potential. You can also envision 8 as two circles stacked on each other. Maybe the bottom circle is bigger. Which circle has more power here, the one on top, or the one at the foundation?

In 2015, we saw a lot of global events that showed us about power: technological progress, violence, changes in our partnership with the Earth and nature, issues of governmental and economic leadership, power imbalance and inequity between nations and groups of people.

Lots of uncomfortable issues around our relationship with power have been brought to the surface for us to face and deal with (8 is also a number of the unconscious, and bringing shadows to the light). It's clear that many of us have power, and not all of those powers are in alignment. Many of us realized that we have more power than we thought we did. But when it comes to using that power responsibly, there are still conflicts we must navigate. Our paths must be made clear.

Figuring it all out

That's where 2016, or Universal Year 9, comes in. Nine is a number of completion, and also represents spiritual gifts. After our power has been brought up to the surface, and we are beginning to understand its full impact, finally we'll have a chance to use our gifts for their true purpose: to serve humanity's highest good.

If you're leaving 2015 with more questions and unfinished business than you had coming in to the year, be assured that next year will be a collective time to tie up the loose ends and finally realize why we've been brought to this place we're in.

In this transition between years, it will be useful to gain some more clarity and understanding of your own gifts and powers, and also your own personal place in time. One way to gain some context here is to calculate your Personal Year number.

Your Personal Year Number

Calculating your Personal Year is very simple: First, take the month and day of your birth (don't include the year). Add those digits together. For example, if you were born on February 14, add 2 + 1 + 4 = 7. If you end up with a two-digit number, add those two digits together to get a one-digit number. That's your Personal Year Number.

For each year, you can take your Personal Year Number and add it to the Universal Year number to get your Personal Year for that year.

The Universal Year in 2015 is 2 + 0 + 1 + 5 = 8.

So if your Personal Year Number is 7, then 7 + 8 = 15. Then we add the digits: 1 + 5 = 6. That means your Personal Year for 2015 is 6.

As for your Personal Year in 2016, it should end up being the same number as your Personal Year Number. (Try it!) So if your Personal Year Number is 7, then your Personal Year in 2016 will also be 7. This makes 2016 a particularly exciting year, because everyone's energy this year will be aligned with the energy they carry with them throughout their life! This is a chance for everyone to get in alignment with their true selves, who they're really meant to be.

Now that you've figured out your personal year, you can use the meanings of the numbers 1-9 to learn about how the next year will serve you individually.

What each Personal Year means

Now that you've figured out your own Personal Years for 2015 and 2016, you can use the following guide to reflect on each year's role in your life.

1: This is a year of leadership, knowing who you are, and asserting yourself. A good year to begin new projects and start to take more initiative in your life.

2: Focus in this Personal Year will be mostly on emotions and intimate relationships. Don't be surprised if you don't get much "done" this year, but know that it's worthwhile to strengthen your relationships and partnerships with others, and get to know how you feel. It'll also be a good year for developing your relationship to your inner knowing: your "in-two-ition".

3: This is a great year for creativity and self-expression. Three is the number of personal creativity and action. You might find yourself trying lots of new things this year!

4: Four is the number of foundations, and the earth. Your focus in this year will be creating stability in the world. It's a good time to deal with practical matters and build the structures you'll need to keep you safe and grounded.

5: This year is all about freedom, letting go, breaking out of the box. Things might be totally unpredictable and go the exact opposite of how you expected them to go. It's likely you'll experience a whirlwind of surprising events this year, which can be a lot of fun if you're willing to go with the flow.

6: I personally see 6 as a "sacral chakra" number - dealing with family and children, and also new ideas and imagination. Responsibility and care for yourself and others will be big themes here. Be sure to pay attention to your familial relationships, and your role in service.

7: This will be a time to go within and really know yourself. Seven is a number that deals with boundaries, self-discipline, and establishing trust, especially with yourself. A good year to take a retreat and engage in self-discovery, establishing clearly what you'd like to experience, free of others' expectations.

8: As mentioned before, this is a year of power. There will be lots of opportunities for accomplishment. You'll be able to reap a lot of benefits and discover your own power. Others will be able to see your power as well.

9: A year of completion. You may end something major in your life such as a job or relationship. Feel free to let go of those things and ideas about yourself that no longer serve your highest good, so next year you'll be able to let in the new beginnings.
